Nana Visitor, born Nana Tucker on July 26, 1957 in New York City, New York, United States, is the daughter of ballet teacher Nenette Charisse and choreographer Robert Tucker, and a niece of legendary actress‑dancer Cyd Charisse. She grew up surrounded by the performing arts, which inspired her to pursue a stage career early, graduating to Broadway in the 1970s with productions such as My One and Only. Her film debut came in the 1977 horror picture The Sentinel, billed under her birth name, and she quickly accumulated television credits on short‑lived sitcoms like Ivan the Terrible and soap operas including Ryan’s Hope, The Doctors, and One Life to Live. At the suggestion of her brother Paris, she adopted the stage name “Nana Visitor” in the early 1980s and later legally changed her surname. Throughout the 1980s she made guest appearances on popular series such as Hunter, MacGyver, Knight Rider, and Highway to Heaven, demonstrating a versatile talent for both drama and comedy. In 1990 she co‑starred with Sandra Bullock in the sitcom Working Girl, further solidifying her TV presence. Her breakout role arrived in 1993 when she was cast as Major (later Colonel) Kira Nerys on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a performance that earned her a lasting place in science‑fiction history and led to later voice work on Star Trek: Lower Decks. After DS9, Visitor expanded into recurring villainous roles on Dark Angel, Broadway revivals such as Chicago as Roxie Hart, and the ABC Family drama Wildfire where she played Jean Ritter.
