Nadežda 'Nađa' Poderegin, professionally known as Nadja Regin, was a Serbian actress, writer, and publisher whose career spanned nearly two decades in Yugoslav, German, and British cinema. Born on 2 December 1931 in Niš, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, she was the daughter of Milka Bajić Poderegin, a professor, and Ignjatije Poderegin, a Russian white émigré who worked as an agricultural scientist. Her father was tragically executed during the Kraljevo massacre in October 1941 by German occupation forces, an event that shaped much of her early life and for which he refused to abandon his colleagues and students. After the war, the family relocated to Belgrade, where young Regin began her acting journey as a child performer at the age of seven and also attended the ballet school. Regin's professional career began during her studies at the Academy for Theatrical Arts in Belgrade, where she was mentored by Joža Rutić and Branko Pleša. Her early Yugoslav film roles included appearances in The Factory Story (1949), The Magic Sword (1950), and Frosina (1952), before she transitioned to international productions. Her career-defining moment came with the 1954 Yugoslav-German co-production The House on the Coast, directed by Boško Kosanović, where she shortened her surname from Poderegin to Regin. This film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and propelled her into international stardom, leading to multi-film contracts in German and Austrian cinema. After moving to London in the mid-1950s, Regin established herself as a notable presence in British television and film, despite initially not speaking a word of English. She appeared in beloved series such as The Adventures of William Tell, Danger Man, Maigret, The Benny Hill Show, and The Saint. However, she is perhaps best remembered for her appearances in two James Bond films: From Russia with Love (1963), where she played the mistress of Kerim Bey alongside Pedro Armendariz, and Goldfinger (1964), where she portrayed Mexican belly dancer Bonita in the pre-credit sequence. She retired from acting in 1968 to spend more time with her daughter, but later reinvented herself as a writer and publisher, co-founding Honeyglen Publishing Ltd in 1980 with her sister Jelena, specializing in philosophy and art history.
