Mitsuo Hamada (浜田 光夫, Hamada Mitsuo) is a distinguished Japanese actor whose career has spanned more than six decades. Born on October 1, 1943, in Tokyo, Japan, Hamada began his acting journey in 1955 and has remained active in the entertainment industry to the present day. In 1960, he officially joined the prestigious Nikkatsu Company, which became the foundation of his prolific film career. He frequently co-starred with the celebrated actress Sayuri Yoshinaga in numerous Nikkatsu productions, establishing himself as one of the prominent figures of the Japanese film industry during the 1960s. His early talent did not go unnoticed, as he secured his first major award at the Elan d'or Awards in 1961, marking the beginning of his rise to stardom. However, Hamada's career faced a significant challenge in 1966 when he was involved in a violent quarrel at a bar in Nagoya, an incident that brought him dangerously close to losing an eye. This unfortunate event temporarily hindered his acting career and forced him to navigate a difficult period in his professional life. Despite this setback, Hamada persevered and continued to build an impressive filmography that includes notable works such as Foundry Town (1962), Bad Girl (1963), Izu no Odoriko (1963), and Gazing at Love and Death (1964). Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Hamada diversified his roles, appearing in films like Sandakan No. 8 (1974), Karafuto 1945 Summer Hyosetsu no Mon (1974), and KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops (1977). He also made significant contributions to television, starring in popular Taiga dramas such as Ten to Chi to (1969) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1983), where he portrayed historical figures including Hashiba Hideyoshi and Ukita Hideie. In 1999, Hamada took on a memorable role in the beloved tokusatsu superhero series Ultraman Gaia, playing the character Kōsuke Ranbashi. His versatility as an actor allowed him to transition seamlessly between genres, from period dramas to science fiction. Even in his later years, Hamada continued to appear in productions such as A Litre of Tears (2005) and Enkiri Village: Dead End Survival (2011), demonstrating his enduring passion for acting.
