Miguel Arteta: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Miguel Arteta (born August 29, 1965) is a well-known Puerto Rican director of film and television. His reputation was built on his acclaimed independent film Chuck & Buck (2000), which earned him the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award, and on the acknowledged films The Good Girl (2002) and Cedar Rapids (2011). Born to a Peruvian father and Spanish mother in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he bounced around Latin America due to his father's occupation as a Chrysler auto parts salesman. Despite getting expelled from a high school in Costa Rica, he managed to graduate from The Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts after moving to Boston to live with his sister. His interest in filmmaking was nurtured at Harvard University's documentary program, following which he attended Wesleyan University, where he met future collaborators Matthew Greenfield and Mike White. His student film 'Every Day is a Beautiful Day' won a Student Academy Award and led to a position assisting Jonathan Demme on the documentary 'Cousin Bobby', who later propelled him to AFI Conservatory, where he received his MFA in 1993. His first film, Star Maps, garnered critical acclaim, five Independent Spirit Award nominations, and debuted at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. He has also directed episodes of popular television shows like The Office, Ugly Betty, and American Horror Story. His most recent work includes directing the 2020 film 'Like a Boss' and the Netflix production 'Yes Day'.
