Michael Kenneth Williams (born November 22, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York) was an American actor whose magnetic presence transformed television and film. Raised on New York Avenue near the Vanderveer Projects, he left George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School to chase a dream as a dancer, landing gigs with Kym Sims, George Michael, and Madonna before turning to choreography for Crystal Waters' "100% Pure Love". A striking vertical scar from a bar fight on his 25th birthday became his signature, opening doors to modeling and eventually his first acting role as High Top alongside Tupac Shakur in the 1996 movie Bullet. Williams' breakthrough arrived in 2002 when he was cast as Omar Little in HBO's The Wire after a single audition; his nuanced performance—combining ruthless street wisdom with unexpected humor—earned critical praise and cemented Omar as a cultural icon, even receiving a public nod from President Barack Obama. He continued to expand his repertoire with roles such as Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, Professor Marshall Kane in Community, and a haunting turn in The Night Of, garnering five Primetime Emmy nominations across projects like Bessie and When They See Us. Beyond television, Williams appeared in acclaimed films including Gone Baby Gone, 12 Years a Slave, Ghostbusters, and voiced characters in video games such as Battlefield 4. Despite his success, he battled drug addiction, openly discussing his struggles with heroin and cocaine, and sought help through a local ministry while filming. On September 6, 2021, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment, the cause ruled an overdose involving fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine.
