Merna Kennedy, born Maude Kahler on September 7, 1908 in Kankakee, Illinois, was an American actress who made a swift but memorable transition from vaudeville stages to the silent silver screen and later to early talkies. The daughter of Maud Reed and German‑American butcher‑turned‑chiropractor John Kahler, she spent her early childhood touring with her brother Melvin (known as Merle) as a singing‑and‑dancing duo on the Orpheum and Pantages circuits, a experience that forged her stage presence and physical stamina. After a tragic accident ended the sibling act, Lita Grey—future wife of Charlie Chaplin—encouraged the young Merna to pursue film work, leading to her breakthrough role as the circus bareback rider in Chaplin’s 1928 masterpiece The Circus.
