Maurício do Valle (1 March 1928 – 7 October 1994) was a prolific Brazilian actor whose career spanned more than four decades, encompassing cinema, television, and stage. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Valle began his screen work in the early 1950s, debuting with an uncredited role in Tudo Azul (1952) before quickly becoming a recognizable face in Brazilian popular culture. Over the next forty‑two years he appeared in 70 films, ranging from gritty regional dramas such as Black God, White Devil (1964) where he portrayed the fearsome Antônio das Mortes, to commercial comedies with the legendary troupe Os Trapalhões. His versatility allowed him to shift seamlessly between the stoic priest in The Hour and Turn of Augusto Matraga (1965) and the ruthless jagunço in Antonio das Mortes, the Jagunço/Killer (1969). In addition to his film work, Valle became a familiar television presence in the 1980s, most notably as a supporting character in Rede Globo's wildly successful series Roque Santeiro (1985), cementing his status as a household name. Critics have praised his ability to infuse even minor roles with a palpable intensity, a quality that made him a sought‑after character actor for directors like Glauber Rocha and Carlos Diegues. Valle’s contributions helped define the aesthetic of Brazil’s Cinema Novo movement, while his later comedy roles broadened his appeal across generations.
