Matthew Charles Berry, known professionally as Matt Berry, is an English actor, comedian, musician and writer whose career has spanned over two decades and encompasses a wildly eclectic range of projects. Born on 2 May 1974 in the village of Bromham, Bedfordshire, he grew up the son of a nurse, Pauline, and a taxi driver, Charles, and later earned a BA in Contemporary Arts from Nottingham Trent University in 1999. His early work included a brief stint on the video‑game magazine show Game Over before he broke through with the cult television series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace in 2004, playing the bizarre twin roles of Todd Rivers and Lucien Sanchez. He soon became a familiar face on British comedy, portraying the sinister tycoon Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh and the over‑the‑top executive Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd, roles that earned him a nomination for Best Male Comedy Newcomer at the 2007 British Comedy Awards. Berry co‑created, wrote, starred in and scored the surreal sitcom Snuff Box alongside Rich Fulcher, and in 2012 he launched the award‑winning series Toast of London as the pretentious thespian Steven Toast, a performance that secured a BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance in 2015. His voice work is equally distinctive, lending his resonant tones to characters such as the doppelgänger dolphin Bubbles in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and the vampire Laszlo in the FX adaptation of What We Do in the Shadows, for which he received an Emmy nomination. Beyond screen work, Berry is a prolific musician, having released eleven studio albums that blend psychedelic rock, folk and television‑theme covers, with recent releases on Acid Jazz Records reaching the UK Top 40.
