Mary Emery (née Hopkins; December 19, 1844 – October 12, 1927) was a prominent American philanthropist whose extraordinary generosity shaped communities on both sides of the United States. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Richard Hopkins and Mary Barr Denny Muhlenberg, Mary came from a family with deep roots and strong values. In 1862, when she was eighteen years old, Mary and her family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, a move that would eventually connect her to one of the most influential industrial families of the era. She received her education at the prestigious Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, where she distinguished herself academically, particularly excelling in advanced mathematics and astronomy—remarkable achievements for a woman of her time. In 1866, Mary married Thomas J. Emery, the eldest son of a prominent businessman whose empire spanned candle manufacturing, real estate, and housing construction. The couple's union produced two sons, Sheldon and Albert, though tragedy struck the family when young Albert was killed in a sledding accident during his years at prep school. Together, Mary and Thomas acquired an expansive estate they named "Mariemont," located near Newport, Rhode Island, which served as a cherished family retreat and reflected their considerable wealth. Upon the death of her husband, Mary inherited a vast fortune that she chose to dedicate to charitable causes across the nation, recognizing what she described as her "vast responsibility" to society. Throughout her later years, she became a quiet but enormously generous benefactor, channeling her wealth into orphanages, colleges, hospitals, and schools, always avoiding the spotlight and public acknowledgment of her donations. In 1923, she funded the development of the planned community of Mariemont, Ohio, naming it after her beloved Rhode Island estate, thereby cementing her legacy as a transformative figure in American urban planning and philanthropy. Mary Emery passed away on October 12, 1927, at the age of eighty-two, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of generosity that continues to impact communities to this day.
