Mary Castle (born Mary Ann Noblett) was an American actress whose career in Hollywood spanned from 1948 to 1962, with her most notable work occurring in western films and television during the 1950s. Born on a ranch in Pampa, Texas, on January 22, 1931, Castle grew up in a family that moved several times before eventually settling in Long Beach, California in 1943. Her striking resemblance to Rita Hayworth became the defining feature of her early career after a Columbia Pictures talent scout signed her, leading the studio to actively promote her as a potential replacement for the legendary star. Columbia Pictures capitalized on this resemblance by casting her in several 1950 films including The Tougher They Come, Prairie Roundup, and Texans Never Cry, where her deliberate mimicry of Hayworth's sultry persona was prominently featured. Castle's most celebrated role came when she signed with Republic Pictures and dyed her hair blonde to portray the female railroad detective Frankie Adams opposite Jim Davis in the western television series Stories of the Century. Her performance as Adams demonstrated remarkable physicality, engaging in numerous fistfights with co-stars such as Marie Windsor and Joan Shawlee, while also displaying impressive gun-handling skills against male actors including Bruce Bennett and Slim Pickens. Despite Stories of the Century winning an Emmy for Best Western or Adventure Series, Castle was eventually replaced by Kristine Miller, a decision that reportedly caused the show to suffer in ratings due to the loss of Castle's unique strength and chemistry with Davis. After leaving Republic, Castle continued working in westerns and made guest appearances on popular television programs including The Bob Cummings Show, Cheyenne, Dragnet, Perry Mason, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet throughout the latter half of the 1950s. Her personal life was marked by significant turmoil, including multiple arrests for public drunkenness, bankruptcy proceedings, and three tumultuous marriages to William France Minchen, Wayne Cote, and Erwin Angelo Frezza, with the latter marriage ending in 1972. In her later years, Castle was diagnosed as bi-polar, though she eventually received proper medication that helped stabilize her condition, and she remained active in western film festivals until her death from lung cancer in Palm Springs, California on April 29, 1998, at the age of 67.
