Mark Gerard Lawson, born on 11 April 1962 in Hendon, London, is a celebrated English journalist, broadcaster, and author whose career has spanned over four decades. Raised in Leeds after his family moved from north‑east England, Lawson was educated at the independent Catholic St Columba's College in St Albans before earning an English degree at University College London, where he was taught by literary figures such as John Sutherland and A. S. Byatt. He embarked on a freelance writing career in 1984, contributing to The Universe and The Times, and soon established himself as a prominent cultural commentator, writing for The Independent (1986–1995) and, from 1995 onward, maintaining a long‑running column for The Guardian. His incisive critiques earned him two TV Critic of the Year awards and a reputation for sharp, sometimes controversial, analysis, a point highlighted by former colleague Richard Gott in 2002. Lawson’s broadcasting credentials include presenting BBC2’s The Late Show and its offshoot The Late Review in the 1990s, as well as the acclaimed radio arts programme Front Row on BBC Radio 4, which he fronted from 1998 to 2014.
