Marianne Koch, born on 19 August 1931 in Munich, is a German actress‑turned‑physician whose career spanned the golden age of post‑war cinema and the early days of German television. She first appeared on screen in 1950 and quickly became a familiar face in more than sixty‑five films, ranging from Heimat‑dramen to international thrillers. Her early work included supporting roles alongside Gregory Peck in the American thriller Night People (1954) and leading parts in Hollywood productions such as Four Girls in Town and Interlude (both 1957). The pinnacle of her international fame arrived with Sergio Leone’s seminal Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars (1964), where she portrayed the tormented heroine Marisol opposite Clint Eastwood. In Germany she also gained household recognition as a regular panelist on the popular quiz show Was bin ich?, a German adaptation of What’s My Line? that dominated ratings through the 1950s to the late 1980s. After a prolific acting period that ended in 1971, Koch resumed her interrupted medical studies, earned her MD in 1974 and practiced as an internal‑medicine specialist in Munich until 1997. Simultaneously she pioneered German television as one of the first hosts of the talk show 3 nach 9, earning a Grimme‑Preis for her work. She continued to appear on various TV programs and even hosted a medical advice radio segment as late as 2014. Her personal life includes a marriage to physician Gerhard Freund (1953‑1973) with whom she had two sons, and a later partnership with writer Peter Hamm until his death in 2019.
