Marguerite Viby (born Ida Marguerite Steenberg Jensen Viby, 25 June 1909 – 8 April 2001) was one of the most celebrated Danish comedy actresses of the twentieth century, whose remarkable career spanned more than five decades from the silent film era to the dawn of Danish television. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a policeman and a secretary, she endured profound personal tragedy early in life when her father died when she was just sixteen years old and her mother passed away only a year later. Despite these hardships, Viby pursued her passion for the performing arts, leaving school at fourteen to work part-time and finance dance lessons under the tutelage of the renowned Danish Royal Dancer John Andersen and at Emilie Walbom's Ballet School. She debuted at age fourteen in a summer revue at Tivoli Gardens in 1923, launching what would become an illustrious career on stage and screen.

Viby began her film career in 1929 with the silent film Højt på en kvist, quickly transitioning into the talkies with the landmark Danish combined sound film He, She and Hamlet in 1932, where she danced and sang a romantic duet with Hans W. Petersen. Danish film historian Morten Piil noted that her role in the 1932 George Schnéevoigt film Tretten År (13 Years) established her most iconic persona: an energetic, witty woman navigating a man's world with cheerful innocence. Among her greatest successes was Mille, Marie og Mig (1937), in which she played a woman with three distinct personalities, including the Marlene Dietrich-inspired nightclub singer Mille, who performed the beloved Danish hit Jeg har elsket dig så længe jeg kan mindes.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Viby became a darling of romantic comedies, starring in popular films such as Frøken Kirkemus, Frøken Vildkat, and Den Store Gavtyv (1956), often under the light-hearted screwball direction of Alice O'Fredericks and Lau Lauritzen Jr.. She also made over a dozen films in Sweden during the 1938–1956 period, including Swedish versions of her biggest Danish hits. In her later career, she transitioned gracefully into television, most notably playing Olga Mortensen in the comedy series En Stor Familie.

In 2000, Viby received the highest honors in Danish cinema, accepting lifetime achievement awards at both the prestigious Bodil Awards and Robert Awards ceremonies. She passed away on 8 April 2001 in Frederiksberg, Denmark, at the age of 91, leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of the true icons of Scandinavian cinema.
