Margareta Fahlén, born Gerd Margareta Fahlén on 8 June 1918 in Sollefteå, Sweden, was a distinguished Swedish actress whose career, though relatively brief, left a notable mark on Scandinavian cinema during the 1940s and early 1950s. Growing up in Uppsala, Fahlén pursued her education with dedication before moving to Stockholm, where she balanced her professional work with a deepening passion for theater. Her talent was first recognized in 1941, paving the way for her screen debut in 1943 in Ivar Johansson's Young Blood. That same year, she appeared in She Thought It Was Him and I Killed, establishing herself as a promising new face in Swedish film. In 1944, she enrolled at the prestigious Dramatens elevskola (Royal Dramatic Theatre's school), where she trained rigorously until 1947. During her graduation year, she was cast as Kristina in August Strindberg's Easter, a performance that proved to be her major breakthrough. This success quickly led to her being awarded the role of Helga in Gustaf Edgren's celebrated adaptation of Tösen från Stormyrtorpet (1947). Fahlén's film career, though short, was remarkably intense, encompassing a string of memorable performances throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, including Iris and the Lieutenant (1946), Crime in the Sun (1947), A Swedish Tiger (1948), Woman in White (1949), and Jack of Hearts (1950). In 1955, she married the Danish actor Poul Reichhardt, with whom she relocated to Denmark, an event that effectively curtailed her acting career as she appeared only sporadically thereafter. The couple divorced in 1962, after which Fahlén chose to redirect her professional life. For the final fifteen years of her life, she worked diligently as a medical secretary at the Orthopedic Hospital in Copenhagen, stepping away from the spotlight entirely. She passed away on 28 October 1978 in Copenhagen at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy of evocative performances that continue to be appreciated by classic cinema enthusiasts.
