Marie Madeleine Berthe Lebeau, better known by her stage name Madeleine Lebeau, was a French actress whose career spanned the tumultuous years surrounding World War II and continued into the vibrant cinema of the 1960s. Born on 10 June 1923 in Antony, France, she entered the film world with an uncredited role in Young Girls in Trouble (1939) before marrying fellow actor Marcel Dalio later that year, a partnership that would prove both personal and professional. The couple fled the advancing German forces in June 1940, enduring a harrowing journey that saw them stranded in Mexico after forged Chilean visas forced the S.S. Quanza to seek a port, during which Lebeau famously learned English. Their perseverance led Lebeau to Hollywood, where she made her debut in Hold Back the Dawn (1941) and then appeared alongside Errol Flynn in Gentleman Jim (1942). Her most iconic role came as Yvonne, the discarded mistress of Humphrey Bogart’s character, in the classic Casablanca, where her heartfelt rendition of “La Marseillaise” captured the anguish and hope of displaced Europeans, earning her a contract with Warner Bros. Despite a brief contract and a divorce from Dalio in 1942, Lebeau continued to work in American films such as Paris After Dark (1943) and Music for Millions (1944) before returning to Europe after the war. In France she featured in Les Chouans (1947) and later collaborated with Federico Fellini in 8½ (1963), demonstrating her versatility across genres and languages. Her later years saw marriages to Italian screenwriter Tullio Pinelli in 1988 and a quiet life in Spain, where she passed away on 1 May 2016 at the age of 92. Lebeau’s legacy endures as a symbol of resilience, a performer who brought authentic emotion to the screen and embodied the spirit of the French resistance.
