Lydia Campbell (née Brooks, born November 1, 1818) was a pioneering diarist and writer from Labrador whose life spanned the dramatic transformation of the region from a fur‑trade outpost to a settled community. Born in Hamilton Inlet, Gross Water (Groswater Bay), Labrador, she was the daughter of Ambrose Brooks, an English employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, and his Inuk wife Susan, giving her a unique bicultural perspective that infused her writings with vivid details of both Indigenous and European ways of life. Her father home‑schooled her, providing a rare education for a woman in the early nineteenth century, and instilled in her a love of observation that later manifested in the extensive journals she kept throughout her long life.

In 1834 Lydia married William Ambrose Blake, with whom she had five children; the marriage introduced her to the Blake family, a prominent HBC lineage, and deepened her involvement in the commercial and social networks of Labrador. After Blake’s death she married Daniel Campbell, a later‑life partner with whom she bore eight additional children, bringing her total offspring to thirteen and cementing her role as a matriarch of one of the largest extended families in the region. Her diaries, later compiled and published as Sketches of Labrador Life in the St. John's Evening Herald in 1894 through the efforts of clergyman Arthur Charles Waghorne, offer an unparalleled window into daily existence, seasonal migrations, and the inter‑generational transmission of knowledge among the Labrador Inuit and settlers. Lydia’s legacy endured through the works of her great‑niece Elizabeth Goudie and the posthumous publication of her son Thomas L. Blake’s journal in 2001, ensuring that her voice continues to inform historians, scholars, and readers interested in the cultural tapestry of early Labrador.
