Thomas Luke Macfarlane, known professionally as Luke Macfarlane, was born on 19 January 1980 in London, Ontario, Canada, the son of Thomas, a director of student health services at the University of Western Ontario, and Penny, a mental‑health nurse. He grew up alongside his twin sister Ruth and older sister Rebecca, attending London Central Secondary School before moving to the Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts where his passion for performance began. After high school he earned a BFA in drama from the Juilliard School in New York City, a training ground that prepared him for a diverse career across stage, television and film. Macfarlane’s early screen break came opposite Cynthia Nixon in Robert Altman’s miniseries Tanner on Tanner, followed by a leading role as PV2 Frank “Dim” Dumphy in FX’s Over There and a part in the historical miniseries Iron Road. His most recognizable television work arrived when he was cast as Scotty Wandell, the husband of Kevin Walker, on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters (2006‑2011), a role that earned him a dedicated fan base and critical notice for its authentic portrayal of a gay relationship. He later headlined Syfy’s space‑opera Killjoys as D’avin Jaqobis, appeared on NBC’s The Night Shift, PBS’s Mercy Street and became a staple of Hallmark Channel rom‑coms, starring in titles such as The Memory Book, Christmas Land and The Mistletoe Promise. In addition to acting, Macfarlane was the lead singer and songwriter for the indie band Fellow Nameless, releasing an underground album and courting a development deal with Maverick Records. A classically trained cellist and trumpet player, he showcased his musical talent in the Hallmark film Chateau Christmas. Openly gay since 2008, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and, alongside his partner, Olympic skier Hig Roberts, welcomed their first child in June 2023. His career continues to evolve, balancing mainstream television, independent film and stage projects while advocating for LGBTQ+ visibility in the entertainment industry.
