Lorne Cardinal: Movies & Box Office

Lorne Cardinal is a Gemini Award‑winning Canadian stage, television and film actor whose career has spanned more than three decades, beginning in 1994 and continuing to the present day. Born on 6 January 1964 on the Sucker Creek First Nation reserve in Alberta, he is of Cree descent and the son of parents who survived the residential school system, a heritage that informs much of his artistic work. Cardinal earned a B.F.A. in acting from the University of Alberta in 1993, becoming the first Indigenous student to graduate from that program, and later received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Thompson Rivers University in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Beyond acting, he has cultivated a reputation as a director, producer, writer, voice artist and dramaturg, roles that have allowed him to shape Indigenous narratives across multiple media platforms. He is perhaps best known for portraying Daniel Deela on the acclaimed drama series North of 60 and Sergeant Davis Quinton, a Cree constable, on the beloved comedy Corner Gas, where his performance combined humor with cultural authenticity and even showcased his passion for rugby by wearing Saskatchewan Prairie Fire merchandise. Cardinal’s theatre work includes a notable 2011 production of Kenneth T. Williams’ play Thunderstick, in which he and Craig Lauzon alternated roles on successive nights, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to collaborative storytelling. In 2016 he co‑produced and assisted directing the documentary Chasing Lear, chronicling an all‑Aboriginal cast of King Lear at the National Arts Centre, further cementing his status as a cultural bridge‑builder. Recent projects include a recurring role on FBI: Most Wanted, a part in the 2023 series Bones of Crows, and the award‑winning satirical short No Reservations that tackled pipeline politics. He resides in Squamish, British Columbia with his wife, producer and writer Monique Hurteau, and remains an influential figure in advancing Indigenous representation in Canadian entertainment.
