Lonette McKee: Movies & Box Office

Lonette Rita McKee, born on July 22, 1954, is an acclaimed American actress and singer who started her career in 1968 and continues to be active in the industry. She rose to fame with her breakout role as Sister Williams in the original 1976 musical-drama film 'Sparkle'. This paved her way to other notable films such as 'Which Way Is Up?' (1977), 'The Cotton Club' (1984), and 'Brewster's Millions' (1985). Throughout her career, she demonstrated tremendous flexibility, juggling between different roles, film genres, and stage performances. Notably, she became the first African American to play the coveted role of Julie, defying racial norms in the Broadway musical 'Show Boat' in 1983. McKee has also showcased her talents in various Broadway productions such as 'The First' and 'Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill'. In addition to acting, McKee also excels in music, contributing her own compositions to films and releasing three solo LPs. She's also taught film directing at The New School in New York, highlighting her versatility in the arts. In her personal life, she's been married once and currently has no children. Her passion for the arts remains undiminished as she expressed her interest in establishing a performing arts center in the New York tri-state area.
