Lionel Sebastián Scaloni was born on May 16, 1978, in the small rural town of Pujato, Santa Fe Province, Argentina, and holds dual Argentine and Italian citizenship through his ancestry in Ascoli Piceno, Marche, Italy. He began his professional playing career in 1995 with Newell's Old Boys before moving to Estudiantes de La Plata, and subsequently joined Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña in December 1997, where he would spend the majority of his career. During his eight-and-a-half-year tenure at Deportivo, Scaloni operated primarily as a right-back or right midfielder, contributing to the team's historic 1999–2000 La Liga championship victory and the 2001–02 Copa del Rey triumph, despite facing competition for starting spots and dealing with knee injuries. His Spanish top-flight journey also included loan spells at West Ham United in the Premier League, where he helped the team reach the 2006 FA Cup final, and later permanent stints at Racing de Santander.
