Linda Lovelace, born Linda Susan Boreman on 10 January 1949 in The Bronx, New York, grew up in a troubled working‑class household where her father was a police officer and her mother a domineering waitress. She attended private Catholic schools and was nicknamed ‘Miss Holy Holy’ for keeping her dates at a safe distance. At sixteen her family moved to Davie, Florida, and at twenty she gave birth to her first child, who was placed for adoption. After a serious car accident that exposed her to hepatitis‑contaminated blood, she returned to New York, where she fell under the control of Chuck Traynor, who became her manager, pimp, and later husband. Under Traynor’s coercion she entered the world of 8 mm “loop” pornography, eventually starring in the 1969 bestiality film Dogarama and the infamous 1972 adult feature Deep Throat, which grossed over $600 million while she received only $1,250 that was confiscated by Traynor. The film’s unprecedented mainstream attention turned her into a cultural lightning rod, earning her a place on the Golden Age of Porn Walk of Fame in 1973, yet she later described the experience as forced prostitution and sexual assault, detailing gun‑point threats and repeated beatings in her 1980 autobiography Ordeal. Her public testimony before the Meese Commission and collaboration with feminist activists such as Andrea Dworkin highlighted her transformation from a porn star to a born‑again Christian and outspoken anti‑pornography activist. After divorcing Traynor she married Larry Marchiano in 1976, gave birth to two more children, Dominic and Lindsay, and briefly returned to the screen in projects such as Deep Throat II and the satirical Linda Lovelace for President, though she soon withdrew from the industry, citing drug use and a desire for a more stable family life. A liver transplant in 1987 alleviated the hepatitis‑related damage from her earlier blood transfusion, and she spent the 1990s lecturing on the dangers of pornography while publishing a second memoir, Out of Bondage, in 1986. In April 2002 a severe automobile accident left her with fatal internal injuries; she died on 22 April at the age of 53, surrounded by her husband and children, and was interred in Parker, Colorado.
