He is the second of three sons of veteran actor John Shrapnel and Francesca Ann Bartley, and he comes from a distinguished artistic lineage that includes his maternal grandparents, the celebrated Academy Award‑nominated actress Deborah Kerr and air‑force officer Tony Bartley, as well as his paternal grandfather, journalist Norman Shrapnel.
