Born Maria Loren Avellaneda Sharp in Sacramento, California, she grew up with an older brother, Daniel, and a mother of Mexican descent from Michoacán who earned her teaching degree later in life. Loren did not learn Spanish until she was ten, a skill she later refined to communicate with relatives in her mother’s native village. Her childhood was peppered with a love for biology, numerous pets, and an unusual participation on a men’s rowing team at an all‑girls high school.
