Larry Charles: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Larry Charles (born in 1955 or 1956) is a renowned American comedian, screenwriter, director, actor, and producer. He began his journey into stardom by performing stand-up comedy in the 1970s, however, he later transitioned into writing for television with his first major gig being for the sketch comedy show, Fridays. His creative contributions were soon recognized, and he was hired to be a staff writer for the sitcom Seinfeld for its first five seasons, ultimately playing a significant role in shaping some of the show's darkest storylines. Interestingly, Charles is also known for his directorial work on the documentary film Religulous and the mockumentary comedy films Borat, Brüno, and The Dictator.

While his television career blossomed, Charles had always harbored a passion for film. His feature debut was Masked and Anonymous (2003), which he directed, and co-wrote with Bob Dylan. Despite the mixed reception, Charles's career in film did not slow down, in fact, he had a much greater success with the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy mockumentary Borat. Furthermore, he also directed Religulous, a documentary featuring Bill Maher's perspective on contemporary religion which was released in October 2008. Larry Charles's journey wasn't just limited to behind the scenes work, he also acted in some of his films. Charles also made his mark on the music industry through his daughter, Pearl Charles, a well-known singer-songwriter.
