Lanny Ross, born Lancelot Patrick Ross on January 19, 1906, in Seattle, Washington, was a multi-talented American entertainer whose career spanned radio, film, and stage. The son of English immigrants Douglas and Winifred Ross, he demonstrated remarkable versatility from an early age, making his theatrical debut at just four years old alongside his father in Ben Greet's professional Shakespearean company. His academic journey was equally impressive, graduating from Taft School in 1924 where he captained both the track team and glee club, before attending Yale University. At Yale, Ross distinguished himself as one of the nation's premier collegiate sprinters, capturing the 1928 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships title in the 300 yards, while also serving as a soloist with the prestigious Yale Glee Club and becoming a member of the exclusive Skull and Bones society and Zeta Psi fraternity. Despite earning a law degree from Columbia Law School in 1931 and studying classical vocal technique at the Juilliard School with Anna Eugénie Schoen-René, Ross ultimately chose entertainment over law, launching his radio career in 1928 and quickly becoming a fixture on programs like the Maxwell House Show Boat alongside Annette Hanshaw.

Ross's entertainment career encompassed remarkable achievements across multiple mediums, establishing him as a leading voice of his generation. He signed with Paramount Pictures as potential competition to Bing Crosby, starring in films such as Melody in Spring and College Rhythm, where he introduced the hit song "Stay as Sweet as You Are," which became his most successful recording. His filmography also included voice work for Max Fleischer's Gulliver's Travels (1939) and the Oscar-nominated performance of "We Mustn't Say Goodbye" in Stage Door Canteen (1943). During World War II, Ross interrupted his career to serve in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of major while entertaining troops alongside Bob Hope in the Southwest Pacific and hosting a vaudeville revue in Yokohama, Japan. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to radio with The Lanny Ross Show on CBS, which ran through the 1950s. In his personal life, he married his business manager Olive Anne White in 1935, and they resided for decades on a farm in Stanfordville, New York, before selling the property to James Cagney and relocating to Manhattan. Ross largely retired from performing in the early 1970s, though he continued occasional appearances until his death from heart failure on April 25, 1988, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
