Lalaine Vergara‑Paras (born June 3, 1987) is an American actress, singer‑songwriter, and bassist best known for her breakthrough role as Miranda Sanchez on the Disney Channel sitcom Lizzie McGuire. Born in Burbank, California to Filipino parents, she grew up alongside three older siblings and spent her early childhood moving between Burbank and Sherman Oaks. At a young age she landed the demanding Broadway tour of Les Misérables, performing as Young Cosette and later as Éponine, which gave her a solid foundation in musical theatre. Her screen debut came in 1999 with the film Borderline, followed shortly by a supporting turn as Kate in the television remake of Annie. The following year, Disney cast her as the feisty Miranda, a role she inhabited for 59 episodes until a contractual dispute in 2002 led to her departure before the series finale and the subsequent Lizzie McGuire movie. During this period she also appeared in the Disney Channel Original Movie You Wish! and made a guest spot on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a Slayer‑in‑Training. After her Disney tenure, Lalaine continued to act in independent projects such as Royal Kill (2009) and had a brief cameo in Easy A (2010). She later explored digital media, co‑starring with Lori Beth Denberg in the web series Raymond and Lane and appearing as a guest on Christy Carlson Romano’s cooking show. In recent years she has narrated the audiobook Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel’s Tween Empire (2024), adding voice‑over work to her diverse résumé. Musically, she signed with Warner Bros. Records after Lizzie McGuire, releasing the pop‑rock album Inside Story (2003) and the EP Haunted (2004), and performed as bassist for the band Vanity Theft before parting ways in 2011. Her career has not been without controversy; a 2007 felony methamphetamine possession charge resulted in a court‑ordered rehabilitation program, which she completed and subsequently had expunged.
