Lajos Szabó (1 July 1902 – 21 October 1967) was a Hungarian philosopher, calligrapher, and one of the founders of the Budapest Dialogical School. Born in Budapest, Szabó experienced political upheaval early in life when he was dismissed from vocational secondary school in 1919 due to his sympathies with the Hungarian Soviet Republic. He briefly participated in the illegal Communist movement at the beginning of the 1920s, before his political views shifted significantly. Working as a bookshop assistant in Vienna and Budapest during the first half of the 1920s, Szabó became a member of Lajos Kassák's avant-garde Munkakör work circle between 1928 and 1930, contributing two articles to the journal Munka. During this formative period he became acquainted with the German political philosopher Karl Korsch, whose uncompromising Marxism would profoundly shape his intellectual trajectory. He often used the sign AO, meaning "AntiOrganisation", which later transformed into a recurring visual motif in his calligraphic works.

In 1930, Szabó began his lifelong intellectual partnership with Béla Tábor, with whom he co-authored Vádirat a szellem ellen (The Indictment of the Spirit) in 1936. Together they progressively moved away from Marxism toward existentialism, engaging with the twentieth-century philosophy of dialogue represented by Ferdinand Ebner, Franz Rosenzweig, and Martin Buber. Following his marriage to Magda Pallós in 1938, Szabó survived deportation to Auschwitz in 1944 and returned to Hungary at the end of 1945. In the post-war years, he and Tábor laid the foundations of the Budapest Dialogical School, collaborating closely with Béla Hamvas and Lajos Fülep in the legendary Thursday Talks. After leaving Hungary in 1956 following the revolution, Szabó lived in Vienna, Brussels, and finally Düsseldorf, where he devoted himself increasingly to abstract calligraphy, beginning in 1954. His calligraphies were exhibited across Europe and are preserved in major museums including the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Berlin Calligraphy Collection, which holds 414 of his works. Szabó died in Düsseldorf on 21 October 1967 and is buried in the town's Jewish cemetery.
