Kurt Kuenne (born October 24, 1973 in Mountain View, California) is an American filmmaker, composer, and writer whose career has spanned more than two decades, beginning with Super 8 experiments at the age of seven and evolving into award‑winning short and feature films. He grew up in Northern California, attended Lynbrook High School, and later honed his craft at the University of Southern California's School of Cinema‑Television, where he produced the early short Remembrances (1995) and earned the prestigious Harold Lloyd Scholarship in Film Editing. After studying film composing, Kuenne returned to directing with his first feature Scrapbook (1999), demonstrating a talent for blending narrative storytelling with original scores. In 2002 he received the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for the script “Mason Mule,” cementing his reputation as a versatile creator. Kuenne gained widespread attention with "Validation" (2007), a whimsical short about a parking attendant who hands out compliments; the film won the Best Short Grand Prize at the Heartland Film Festival, earned an A+ rating from The Independent Critic, and amassed more than ten million views on YouTube, showcasing his ability to connect with a global audience. His most emotionally resonant work, "Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father" (2008), is a documentary he produced, directed, and scored entirely on his own, chronicling the tragic murder of his childhood friend Andrew Bagby; the film has been described as a gut‑wrenching experience that "will rip you apart inside and pour your guts out through your tear ducts." Continuing his feature‑film trajectory, Kuenne wrote, directed, and scored Shuffle (2011), starring T. J. Thyne, which earned the Jury Award for Best Feature at the 17th Stony Brook Film Festival. Most recently, his newly revised orchestral score for the silent classic Cyrano de Bergerac will open the 2025 Pordenone Silent Film Festival, performed live by the Orchestra da Camera di Pordenone under Maestro Ben Palmer, underscoring his enduring commitment to both contemporary and historic cinema.
