Knute Erickson, born Knut Timar Carlsson Eriksson on May 27, 1873, was a Swedish-American entertainer whose life bridged two continents and several eras of American show business. While some sources claim he was born as Carl Erickson in 1872 in Ogden, Utah, to Swedish immigrant parents, firm evidence from birth records and his passport applications indicates that he was actually born in Norrköping, Sweden in 1873 and emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1881. He grew up in Salt Lake City, where he worked backstage at a local theatre before relocating to New York City to pursue dramatic studies. His theatrical debut on Broadway came in 1894, when he appeared alongside the comedian Mack Swain, and he soon became known for playing Swedish characters on stage. These early performances laid the foundation for his later success in character comedy.

In the early 1900s, Erickson developed popular Swedish immigrant characters, most notably "Yon Yonson" and the more commercially successful "Daffy Dan," the latter of which he performed in vaudeville shows produced by the prominent theatrical producer Jesse Lasky. He transitioned to the emerging medium of film in 1915, appearing in two short silent films while continuing his vaudeville work. After 1921, he established himself in Hollywood as a character actor in minor roles, beginning with Gasoline Gus, in which he co-starred with Roscoe Arbuckle. Over the following fifteen years, Erickson appeared in more than thirty films, mostly in small or uncredited parts. These included notable performances in The Monster (1925) opposite Lon Chaney, The Non-Stop Flight (1926), and The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933), the latter directed by the legendary Frank Capra. Erickson passed away in Los Angeles, California, on December 31, 1945, at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile performer who excelled in both the vaudeville tradition and the early decades of American cinema.
