Kálmán Rózsahegyi (6 October 1873 – 27 August 1961) was a celebrated Jewish Hungarian actor and drama teacher, widely regarded as one of the most notable representatives of realist theatre in Hungary. Born in Endrőd, Békés, he descended from a family of theatre actors; his father, Ödön Rózsahegyi, performed in the countryside, and young Kálmán followed in his footsteps. He began his acting career in 1892 with the troupe of Sándor Dobó, and subsequently worked in Debrecen and Cluj-Napoca before joining the Hungarian National Theatre in 1898. Between 1900 and 1935, Rózsahegyi remained a devoted member of the National Theatre, eventually being elected to permanent membership in 1923. His work spanned a broad range, covering all the shades of low comedy and sensual humor, and he was not an artist of words, but rather of simple, natural and direct plays. In the 1910s and 1920s, his name became popular as a cabaret artist, gaining him renown abroad, including a notable appearance in the United States in 1926. After retiring from the National Theatre in 1935, he continued to act in an assortment of private theatres. Together with his wife, Angéla Hevesi, he founded a famous private drama school that produced many notable actors such as Róbert Rátonyi, Juci Komlós, and József Sas. Due to his Jewish ancestry, he was prevented from acting during World War II, and after 1945, Tamás Major forbade him from rejoining the National Theatre. In the following decade, he performed at various venues including the Pest, Hungarian Comedy, Hungarian, Budapest Operetta, and Madách Theatres, excelling in operettas, comedies, cabarets, and classical drama. His most celebrated roles included Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, the gravedigger in Hamlet, the fool in King Lear, and Gobbo in The Merchant of Venice. Rózsahegyi died on 27 August 1961 in Budapest, leaving behind a legacy as a permanent member of the National Theatre, founder of an iconic acting school, and an outstanding artist beloved by both students and audiences alike. He was remembered as a uniquely voiced, smiling man who was at home in every genre of performance, and his birth town elected him an honorary citizen in recognition of his enduring contributions to the arts.
