Karen Olivo, now publicly identified as KO, is an American stage and television actor, theatre educator, and singer born on August 7, 1976 in the South Bronx of New York City. Their multicultural heritage—Puerto Rican and Native American ancestry from their father and Dominican and Chinese roots from their mother—shaped a vibrant artistic sensibility that would later inform a career marked by groundbreaking roles. After studying at the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts and briefly attending the University of Cincinnati’s College‑Conservatory of Music, KO left school to join the original Broadway cast of Rent in 1997, initially as a swing and understudy before taking on the role of Mimi on the national tour.
