Johns Hopkins (May 19, 1795 – December 24, 1873) was an American merchant, investor, and philanthropist whose life spanned the formative years of the United States. Born on the family’s 500‑acre White’s Hall plantation in Gambrills, Maryland, he was the second of eleven children of Samuel Hopkins and Hannah Janney, a Quaker family of English and Welsh descent. After an apprenticeship at a Baltimore wholesale grocery run by his uncle Gerard T. Hopkins, he left the plantation at age seventeen and quickly proved his acumen by managing the store during the War of 1812. By 1819 he co‑founded Hopkins & Brothers Wholesalers, trading goods across the Shenandoah Valley, and later amassed a fortune through shrewd investments, most notably in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad where he served as director and finance committee chairman. His business success allowed him to retire at fifty‑two, yet he remained deeply involved in civic affairs, bailing out the B&O Railroad twice and supporting Baltimore’s financial stability during crises. A staunch Union supporter and friend of President Abraham Lincoln, Hopkins used his Baltimore estate, Clifton, as a gathering place for Union strategists during the Civil War. His Quaker upbringing informed a lifelong commitment to social welfare: he funded free medical facilities, orphanages, asylums, and schools, with a particular focus on the poor and newly freed African Americans. In his 1870 will he bequeathed $7 million—primarily B&O stock—to establish a free hospital, a university, and a Colored Children Orphan Asylum, creating institutions that would become Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and related schools. His legacy endures as a model of wealth used for public benefit, predating Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth by decades.
