John Hillerman (John Benedict Hillerman) was an American actor whose most iconic role was the fast‑talking, aristocratic British majordomo Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on the hit television series Magnum, P.I. (1980‑1988). Born on December 20, 1932 in Denison, Texas, he grew up as the middle child of gas‑station owner Christopher Benedict Hillerman and Lenora Joan Medlinger, and he traced part of his heritage to German, Dutch, Austrian, and German immigrant ancestors. A precocious lover of opera at age ten, he traveled to Dallas to watch Metropolitan Opera productions, and after high school he attended the University of Texas at Austin, studying journalism for three years before his life took a military turn. From 1953 to 1957 Hillerman served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant in the Strategic Air Command, maintaining B‑36 bombers and discovering a passion for acting while participating in a Fort Worth theatrical group, a revelation that prompted his move to New York City after discharge. In New York he honed his craft at the American Theatre Wing, appearing in more than one hundred stage roles—including Henry IV, Part 2 and The Great God Brown—yet financial pressures led him to Hollywood in 1969, where his film career began with an uncredited reporter part in They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970). Director Peter Bogdanovich subsequently cast him in several notable movies such as The Last Picture Show, What's Up, Doc?, and Paper Moon, and Hillerman continued to build a steady résumé with supporting roles in classics like Chinatown (1974) and Blazing Saddles (1974). His television work before Magnum, P.I. included co‑starring on Ellery Queen, a recurring turn as Mr. Conners on One Day at a Time, and a memorable appearance as Betty White’s estranged husband on The Betty White Show. The Higgins character earned Hillerman five Golden Globe nominations (winning in 1981) and four Emmy nominations (winning in 1987), and he famously learned the character’s refined Received Pronunciation by listening to Laurence Olivier’s recitation of Hamlet. After retiring from acting in 1999, Hillerman returned to Texas, where he lived quietly until his death from cardiovascular disease on November 9, 2017 in Houston at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of unmistakable charm and a body of work that continues to delight fans of classic television and film.
