John Mayer (born John Clayton Mayer on October 16, 1977) is an American singer‑songwriter, guitarist and record producer who emerged from the Boston‑based Berklee College of Music before launching a solo career that has spanned more than two decades. Raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was introduced to the electric guitar after seeing Michael J. Fox’s performance in Back to the Future, and quickly developed a passion for blues icons such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy and B.B. King. After a brief stint with the duo Lo‑Fi Masters in Atlanta, he released the independent EP Inside Wants Out (1999) and signed with Aware/Columbia, debuting the platinum‑selling album Room for Squares (2001) which earned him a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Your Body Is a Wonderland”. His follow‑up Heavier Things (2003) produced the hit “Daughters”, winning Song of the Year at the 2005 Grammys. In 2005 Mayer formed the John Mayer Trio, exploring a heavier blues‑rock sound that culminated in the acclaimed Continuum (2006), an album that received multiple Grammy nominations and won Best Pop Vocal Album. Subsequent releases such as Battle Studies (2009), Born and Raised (2012) and Paradise Valley (2013) demonstrated his willingness to shift between pop, folk, country and Americana influences. After a vocal‑cord granuloma forced a temporary hiatus, he returned with The Search for Everything (2017) and the synth‑laden Sob Rock (2021), each showing his adaptability to changing musical trends. Beyond his solo work, Mayer has collaborated with artists ranging from Frank Ocean and Kanye West to Ed Sheeran and Barbra Streisand, and since 2015 he has toured with the surviving members of the Grateful Dead as part of Dead & Company. He is also a noted television host, columnist for Esquire, and an avid watch collector, serving as a juror for the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève and being appointed Creative Conduit of Audemars Piguet in 2024. Over his career he has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, won seven Grammy Awards, and remains a prominent figure in contemporary popular music.
