Born on August 12, 1935 in Revere, Massachusetts, he grew up in Winchester and discovered his love for performance at the Buxton School, later studying drama at Oberlin College before transferring to Boston University where he trained under Peter Kass. After graduation he worked odd jobs, including as a cab driver and photographer, while honing his craft in regional theatre, most notably at the Charles Playhouse in Boston where his performance in Our Town drew critical acclaim. In the early 1960s he moved to New York City, where he quickly became a fixture of the off‑Broadway scene, earning Obie Awards for his work in Israel Horovitz’s The Indian Wants the Bronx and Line. His film debut arrived with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972), where his subtle portrayal of the tragic Fredo Corleone earned him lasting recognition and led to further collaborations with Coppola on The Conversation (1974) and the expanded role in The Godfather Part II (1974). Cazale’s talent shone in Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon (1975), garnering a Golden Globe nomination and showcasing his capacity for both vulnerability and intensity. A devoted partner of Meryl Streep from 1976, he continued to balance stage work—appearing as Angelo in Measure for Measure—with film, completing his final performance in The Deer Hunter (1978) despite a terminal lung‑cancer diagnosis.
