Joe Stevens, born Joseph Grady on July 25, 1938 in New York City, is an American photographer whose career has spanned more than six decades, making him a seminal chronicler of rock and roll history. Beginning in the early 1960s, Stevens managed the Playhouse, a Greenwich Village coffeehouse, where he first began snapping photos of emerging musicians, an informal practice encouraged by iconic photographer Jim Marshall. Although he never received formal photographic training, his work as a road manager for artists such as Miriam Makeba and The Lovin' Spoonful gave him intimate access to the music world and honed his eye for candid moments. A pivotal encounter with Marshall at Woodstock convinced Stevens that he had an eye for photography, prompting him to pursue the craft full‑time and eventually relocate to England in 1971‑1972, where he contributed to the International Times under the pseudonym “Captain Snaps.” In 1972, Paul and Linda McCartney hired him to document the Wings Over Europe Tour, a commission that cemented his reputation and linked him to one of the era’s most influential bands. Throughout the 1970s Stevens shot numerous covers for the New Musical Express, and upon returning to New York he captured the raw energy of the CBGB scene, preserving early images of Debbie Harry, the Ramones, and countless punk pioneers. His informal style produced iconic photographs such as Paul McCartney shielding his face in Linda’s arms during a Swedish drug arrest, John Lennon with plastic‑bag‑covered hands protesting the Oz obscenity trial, and Peter Gabriel submerged in soap‑bubble‑filled bathtub in Stevens’s London flat. In January 1978 he rode with the Sex Pistols on their sole American tour, later assisting Johnny Rotten’s return to New York by providing airfare and temporary housing. Critics and musicians alike, including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, have praised Stevens as “the bridge between New York and London,” a figure who helped shape the visual narrative of new music in the 1970s and beyond.
