Jean-Pierre Grumbach, professionally known as Jean-Pierre Melville, was a ground-breaking French filmmaker. Born on 20 October 1917, Melville was heralded as the spiritual godfather of the French New Wave. He is celebrated as one of the first fully independent French filmmakers to find commercial and critical success. Starting from crime dramas like Bob Le Flambeur (1956), Le Doulos (1962), and war films such as Le Silence De La Mer (1949), Melville's impressive portfolio extend to other classics like Le Samouraï (1967) and Le Cercle Rouge (1970). His cinematic approach was influenced by his service in the French Resistance during World War II, during which he adopted the pseudonym 'Melville', honoring his favorite American author, Herman Melville. His films, primarily noir and neo-noir crime dramas, were characterized by a sparse yet stylish aesthetic, leading to a high influence on future generations of filmmakers, earning him praise from critics like Roger Ebert.

Raised in Paris, Melville was always interested in the world of arts and film. After working as a courier and wedding photographer, he found himself serving in the French Resistance during World War II, an experience that would leave a distinct mark on his cinematic work. Following the war, Melville faced adversity while attempting to enter filmmaking, resulting in his decision to become an independent director and keep 'Melville' as his stage name. He went on to gain significant recognition for his unique take on film noir, influenced by American gangster films. His minimalist style, combined with the use of weapons, clothing, and accessories to create distinctive characters, redefined the crime film genre. Unfortunately, Jean-Pierre Melville passed away from a heart-related issue on 2 August 1973.
