Jean Wyllys de Matos Santos is a Brazilian lecturer, journalist, and former federal deputy who first entered the public eye as the winner of the fifth season of Big Brother Brasil in 2005, becoming the show’s first openly gay contestant. Born on 10 March 1974 in Alagoinhas, Bahia, he grew up as one of seven children in a modest family; his mother worked as a washerwoman and his father was a car painter who struggled with alcoholism. After attending a boarding school, Wyllys moved to Salvador where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Federal University of Bahia, laying the groundwork for a career that would blend media, activism, and politics. His television fame translated into political capital, and in 2010 he was elected to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies representing the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) thanks to the “voto de legenda” system, serving from 2011 until his resignation in 2019. During his two terms he championed LGBT rights, proposed legislation on the regulation of prostitution, the legalization of marijuana, and public funding for gender‑affirming surgery, and famously confronted right‑wing figures such as pastor Silas Malafaia and future president Jair Bolsonaro, even spitting at Bolsonaro during the Dilma Rousseff impeachment vote. Wyllys’s outspoken stance made him a target of severe death threats and a coordinated online smear campaign that falsely attributed extremist statements to him, prompting him to create a debunking section on his website. The threats intensified after the 2018 assassination of his close ally Marielle Franco, leading Wyllys to decline his third term and seek exile, a decision publicly celebrated by Bolsonaro’s supporters. After leaving Congress, he pursued doctoral research on “fake news” at the University of Barcelona, returned briefly to Brazil in 2023, and continues to comment on national politics, including urging President Lula to step aside in favor of Simone Tebet in 2026.
