Josephine Angela Sorbello, known professionally as Jan Shepard, was an American actress born on March 19, 1928, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, to parents of Sicilian descent, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sorbello. She demonstrated exceptional academic abilities early in life, graduating as the valedictorian of her class at Quakertown High School, where she also participated in locally produced plays, sparking her passion for acting. After completing her high school education, Shepard moved to California to pursue her dream of becoming a professional actress, and she honed her craft at the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse, one of the most renowned acting schools of that era. This training prepared her for a successful career in both film and television, where she would go on to appear alongside some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including the legendary Elvis Presley in two of his most memorable films. Her Sicilian heritage and small-town Pennsylvania upbringing gave her a distinctive presence that translated well to the screen, allowing her to bring authenticity to a wide variety of roles across multiple genres.

Shepard's career spanned over six decades, beginning in 1954 and continuing until 2017, during which she appeared in notable films such as Sabre Jet, King Creole (1958), and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966), the latter two featuring her opposite Elvis Presley before and after his Army induction and his mother's death. She also played the recurring role of Nurse Betty in the syndicated television series Dr. Christian and made guest appearances in numerous popular television shows of the era, including Waterfront, Bat Masterson, The Man Behind the Badge, Tales of the Texas Rangers, Private Secretary, Rawhide, Laramie, Perry Mason, Highway Patrol, Gunsmoke, Tombstone Territory, The High Chaparral, and The Virginian, among many others. In her personal life, Shepard met actor Ray Boyle in 1951, and the couple married in 1954, remaining together until Boyle's death in 2022, and they had one child together. Shepard passed away from pneumonia at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, on January 17, 2025, at the age of 96, leaving behind a rich legacy in American television and film history.
