James MacTaggart: Movies & Filmography

James MacTaggart was a Scottish television producer, director, and writer born on 25 April 1928 in Glasgow, Scotland. He served in the Royal Army Service Corps from 1946, eventually rising to the rank of Captain before being demobbed in 1949. Following his military service, MacTaggart pursued higher education at the University of Glasgow, where he studied Political Economy and Social Economics, graduating with an MA in 1954. Initially embarking on a career as an actor, MacTaggart soon transitioned into production work for BBC Radio in Scotland before making his mark in television. His move to London around 1961 came at the invitation of his close friend, scriptwriter Troy Kennedy Martin, with whom he shared a revolutionary vision for the medium.

MacTaggart was determined to dismantle the conventions of naturalism in television drama, a goal articulated by Kennedy Martin as wanting to 'destroy naturalism... if possible, before Christmas.' During a television career spanning nearly two decades, he wrote, directed, or produced close to 100 plays or episodes. He contributed to series such as Storyboard (1961) and Studio 4 (1962) before being entrusted with producing the second season of The Wednesday Play, a series credited by Sydney Newman, the Head of BBC Drama, as owing much of its success to MacTaggart's involvement. He later directed episodes of both The Wednesday Play and its successor, Play for Today. MacTaggart also joined Kestrel Productions, where he directed Dennis Potter's Moonlight on the Highway (1969) starring Ian Holm and Simon Gray's Pig in the Poke (1969). His sole feature film, All the Way Up, was released in 1970. MacTaggart died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1974 in Chiswick, London, before completing Robinson Crusoe (1974). His legacy endures through the annual MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, though Ken Loach noted in 2019 that the lecture has ironically become 'a mouthpiece for the establishment,' contrary to MacTaggart's iconoclastic spirit.
