Aurelian Smith Jr., better known by his ring name Jake "The Snake" Roberts, was born on May 30, 1955 in Gainesville, Texas, the son of famed wrestler Grizzly Smith. Growing up in a turbulent household, he endured abuse and instability before finding solace in the world of professional wrestling, where he debuted in 1975 after a brief stint as a referee. Roberts quickly distinguished himself with a dark charisma and masterful psychological storytelling, pioneering the use of the DDT finish and the dramatic inclusion of live snakes—most famously a python named Damien—into his matches, creating a legacy that would influence generations of wrestlers.
