Jack Edwards Livesey, professionally known as Jack Livesey, was a distinguished British film and stage actor whose career spanned over four decades from the silent film era through the golden age of Hollywood. Born on 11 June 1901 in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, he hailed from a prominent theatrical family; he was the son of actor Sam Livesey, brother to Barry Livesey, and both cousin and step-brother to the celebrated Roger Livesey, creating a rich dynastic legacy in British entertainment. Livesey began his screen career in 1918 with The Divine Gift and subsequently built an impressive filmography that showcased his versatility across genres, from historical dramas like The Wandering Jew (1933) where he portrayed Godfrey, Duke of Normandy, to the acclaimed biographical film Rembrandt (1936) alongside Charles Laughton. His early British cinema work included notable performances in Penny Paradise (1938) and Old Bones of the River (1938), establishing him as a reliable character actor capable of bringing depth to supporting roles. Beyond the silver screen, Livesey demonstrated his theatrical prowess on the West End stage, notably appearing in the hit musical The Lisbon Story from 1943 to 1944 during the height of World War II. In the latter phase of his career, Livesey transitioned to American television and film, relocating to the United States where he continued working until his death. He made memorable appearances in popular American series including Maverick in 1960, where he portrayed the character Gillespie MacKenzie in the episode "Cruise of the Cynthia B" alongside James Garner. In this memorable guest appearance, Garner's character Bret Maverick finds Livesey's character hanging from a tree in the opening scene, cuts him down, and subsequently regrets the decision. He also appeared in multiple episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents between 1960 and 1962, playing various characters including a ship's captain and a psychiatrist. His final screen appearances were released posthumously in 1962, including roles in That Touch of Mink and The Notorious Landlady, demonstrating his enduring presence in the industry until his passing. Livesey died on 12 October 1961 in Burbank, California, at the age of 60, leaving behind a substantial body of work that bridged British and American entertainment industries and reflected the evolution of cinema from the silent era through the early 1960s.
