Ian Don Marter (28 October 1944 – 28 October 1986) was an English actor and writer whose career spanned the dynamic era of late‑1960s to mid‑1980s British television and publishing. Born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, he was the son of Donald Marter and Helen Donaldson and earned a scholarship to St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he studied English language and literature and became actively involved in the college drama society, graduating in 1966. After university he joined the Bristol Old Vic, initially serving as a stage manager while also taking on acting roles, a dual experience that honed his versatility on both sides of the curtain. Marter’s most iconic screen appearance came when he was cast as Harry Sullivan, the affable companion to the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, debuting in December 1974 and appearing through September 1975 with a brief return later that year; his portrayal added a robust, older‑style presence that balanced Tom Baker’s energetic Doctor. Beyond his on‑screen work, Marter contributed to the Doctor Who franchise as an author, penning nine novelisations for Target Books and creating original spin‑off fiction such as Harry Sullivan’s War, pioneering licensed prose that expanded the series’ universe. He also co‑wrote a daring, though ultimately unproduced, feature‑film script titled Doctor Who Meets Scratchman, whose concept of a cosmic pinball showdown was later honoured in a 2019 novelisation dedicated to him. In the 1980s Marter broadened his writing portfolio, adapting popular American films like Splash and Down and Out in Beverly Hills for Target’s Star Books imprint, often using the pen name Ian Don. His acting credits extended to series such as The Brothers, Crown Court, Bergerac, and the New Zealand soap Close to Home, as well as minor film roles in cult classics like The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Despite a promising trajectory, Marter’s life was cut short when he suffered a fatal heart attack on his 42nd birthday, a loss mourned by colleagues who remembered his talent, warmth, and pioneering spirit in both performance and literary realms.
