Hong Khaou is a British film director and screenwriter whose work bridges personal memory, cultural displacement, and lyrical storytelling. Born on 22 October 1975 in Cambodia, he was the youngest of four children to Chinese‑Cambodian parents, and his early life was marked by upheaval: his family fled to Vietnam after the Fall of Phnom Penh and later arrived in England as political refugees when he was eight. This migratory experience informs his cinematic voice, which often explores themes of identity, language, and belonging. After completing a BA (Hons) in Film Production at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design (now University for the Creative Arts) in 1997, Khaou entered the independent film scene, quickly gaining recognition for his short films. His 2006 short Summer premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, and Spring (2011) was selected for both Berlin and Sundance, signaling his emerging talent on the international stage.
