Henry Cass (born 24 June 1903 in London – died 15 March 1989) was a prominent British director whose career spanned several decades and encompassed significant contributions to both classical theatre and cinema. Before establishing himself behind the camera, Cass began his professional journey as an actor, training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), which provided him with a solid foundation in performance arts. In the 1930s, he became particularly renowned as a prolific stage director of classical theatre at the legendary Old Vic, where he honed his craft and developed a keen eye for dramatic composition. His early foray into motion pictures occurred as early as 1923, when pioneering filmmaker Lee DeForest captured Cass in the experimental short film Henry Cass Demonstration Film, produced using DeForest's innovative Phonofilm sound-on-film process; this experimental work was previewed at the Engineers Society of New York and premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in New York alongside seventeen other Phonofilms, marking Cass's initial presence in the emerging medium of synchronized sound cinema.

Transitioning from stage to screen with remarkable versatility, Cass became particularly prolific in the realms of horror and comedy, directing numerous British features from the late 1930s through the 1960s that showcased his adaptability across genres. His extensive filmography includes notable works such as Lancashire Luck (1937), the charming comedy Last Holiday (1950), the Gothic horror picture Blood of the Vampire (1958), and the thriller The Hand (1960), demonstrating his facility for both light entertainment and atmospheric suspense. Cass maintained an active career in cinema until at least 1968, with his final credited work being Happy Deathday, which he also co-authored with journalist Peter Howard. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Cass shared his life with actress Joan Hopkins, to whom he was married. His contributions to British film and theatre remain documented through his extensive body of work that bridges the silent experimental era and the golden age of British genre cinema.
