Gwen Welles, born Gwen Goldberg on March 4, 1951 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was an American actress whose career spanned the tumultuous years from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. The daughter of clothing designer Rebecca Welles and Barton Goldberg, she grew up alongside sisters Elizabeth (Betsy) and Lori, and after a brief stint working as a dress saleswoman at seventeen she pursued higher education at Vassar College, an experience that helped shape her artistic sensibilities. Welles made her cinematic debut in A Safe Place (1971) and quickly attracted the attention of French director Roger Vadim, with whom she spent three formative years in Paris, living together and even posing for nude photographs to fund her stay. Her most celebrated role came in Robert Altman's seminal ensemble piece Nashville (1975), where she portrayed the untalented yet endearing singer Sueleen Gay, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Altman's earlier collaboration, California Split (1974), and later work with independent filmmaker Henry Jaglom on New Year's Day (1989) and Eating (1990) demonstrated her versatility across mainstream and arthouse cinema. Beyond film, Welles appeared in a memorable 1986 Saturday Night Live sketch hosted by Sam Kinison, showcasing her comedic timing. Off‑screen, she was a devoted practitioner of yoga, meditating twice daily, and an advocate for holistic health. In 1975 she married fellow actor Harris Yulin, though the couple did not have children. Tragically, her life was cut short by bowel cancer; she passed away on October 13, 1993 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 42.
