Grethe Weiser (German pronunciation: [ˈɡʁeːtə ˈvaɪzɐ]; 27 February 1903 – 2 October 1970) was a celebrated German actress whose career spanned nearly four decades and encompassed both the cabaret stage and the silver screen. Born in Hanover, she spent her formative childhood years in Dresden, where she developed the resilient and spirited personality that would later define her on-stage presence. Seeking to escape her dominant and occasionally violent father, Weiser made the bold decision at a young age to marry a Jewish confectionery manufacturer in 1920, a union that produced her only child, a son, born in 1922. Quite swiftly, she established herself as a prominent figure in the vibrant cabaret scene of Berlin, particularly after her husband became the leaseholder of a nightclub on the famous Kurfürstendamm, providing her with a direct avenue into the world of entertainment. Her film debut arrived soon after in 1927, marking the beginning of a prolific career in German cinema that would continue unabated until the early 1960s. Weiser entered into a lifelong romantic relationship with the prominent UFA film producer Hermann Schwerin beginning in 1934, though the couple did not formally marry until 1958; her previous marriage had been legally dissolved that same year in 1934. Notably, Weiser avoided becoming a member of the Nazi Party despite operating within the German film industry during the Third Reich, and she remarkably managed to finance and arrange for both her former husband and her son to survive the Nazi years in Switzerland while simultaneously continuing her acting career within Germany. Her filmography is impressively extensive, featuring memorable roles in productions such as "Salto Mortale" (1931), "Fanfares of Love" (1951), "Hooray, It's a Boy!" (1953), and the Freddy film series in the early 1960s, demonstrating her remarkable versatility across genres including comedy, drama, and musical productions.
