Giorgio De Lullo (24 April 1921 – 10 July 1981) was an acclaimed Italian actor and stage director whose contributions to Italian theater and cinema left a lasting legacy in the mid-twentieth century. Born in Rome, Italy, De Lullo began his formal training in the dramatic arts in 1943, when he enrolled at the prestigious Silvio d'Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts. However, his time at the academy was cut short after only two years due to a breach of the institution's strict academic regulations, as he had appeared in a stage work directed by Mario Landi at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan. Despite this setback, De Lullo quickly gained critical acclaim in 1945 for his role in Il Candeliere, directed by Orazio Costa, which marked a turning point in his early theatrical career. In 1946, he transitioned into the world of cinema with his film debut, and subsequently began a long and fruitful collaboration with the legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti, working closely with him on numerous stage productions in the years that followed. In 1954, De Lullo took a pivotal step in his career by co-founding the renowned theatrical company "La compagnia dei giovani" (The Company of the Young), alongside distinguished actors including Rossella Falk, Anna Maria Guarnieri, Romolo Valli, and Umberto Orsini. This ensemble became one of the most celebrated theater companies in Italy, achieving both national and international success for its innovative productions and exceptional performances. De Lullo expanded his artistic horizons in 1955 when he debuted as a stage director with an adaptation of Colette's Gigi, showcasing his versatility and creative vision beyond acting. Throughout his career, he also appeared in notable films such as The Ten Commandments (1945), The Vow (1950), It Takes Two to Sin in Love (1954), Songs of Italy (1955), and Goodbye Naples (1955). Tragically, Giorgio De Lullo passed away on 10 July 1981 in Rome, Italy, at the age of 60, due to cirrhosis, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that continues to be studied and celebrated in Italian theatrical history.
