Giorgi Shavgulidze was a prominent Georgian stage and film actor whose career spanned over three decades during the Soviet era. Born in 1910 in Kutaisi, he began his theatrical journey in 1928 as part of the Kutaisi–Batumi theatre company led by the legendary director Kote Marjanishvili. When the troupe relocated to Tbilisi and became the Marjanishvili Theatre, Shavgulidze became one of its leading actors. He was equally comfortable in dramatic and comedic roles, demonstrating remarkable range and versatility throughout his career. Among his most celebrated performances was the role of Nikifor in Ioseb Mosashvili's play His Star, for which he was awarded the prestigious Stalin Prize in 1952. He also delivered a memorable performance as the postmaster Shpekin in Nikolai Gogol's classic satire The Government Inspector, showcasing his talent for comic timing and character work. In addition to his theatrical achievements, Shavgulidze made significant contributions to Georgian cinema, beginning his film career in 1938. He appeared in notable productions such as Giorgi Saakadze (1943), the title role in Davit Guramishvili (1946), and Keto and Kote (1948), establishing himself as a versatile screen actor. In 1955, he was honored with the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, one of the highest cultural distinctions in the Soviet republic. He also received two Orders of the Red Banner of Labour and the Order of the Badge of Honour for his contributions to the arts. In his personal life, Shavgulidze was married to fellow actress Liziko Vachnadze, an Honoured Artist of the Georgian SSR. He passed away on 13 April 1959 in Tbilisi at the age of 48 and was laid to rest at the Didube Pantheon, a cemetery reserved for many of Georgia's most distinguished cultural figures and national luminaries.
