Gillian May Armstrong, born on 18 December 1950, is an acclaimed Australian film and documentary director. Her notable works include My Brilliant Career, Little Women, The Last Days of Chez Nous, and Mrs. Soffel. Armstrong made a name for herself as a decorated filmmaker, bagging numerous awards, including an AFI Best Director Award, and has been nominated for prestigious recognitions such as Palme D'Or and two Golden Bear Awards. Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Armstrong was the middle child of a real estate agent father and a primary school teacher mother. She cultivated her interest in the arts while attending a local high school and later, at Swinburne Technical College, where she initially pursued theatrical set design. Armstrong's introduction to the film industry, however, was by chance and not by choice. Captivated by the art of cinema, she eventually won a scholarship to study at Australia's first film school - the Australian Film and Television School. She embarked on her directing career at a very young age of 27 and experienced her first taste of success with her short film The Singer and the Dancer. Armstrong continues to be active in the film industry, working on various genres, chiefly period drama. She's noted for portraying intimate lives of strong female characters.

Armstrong has two daughters and lives with her husband John Pleffer.
